This is a highly responsible avian technician position based out of the Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL). The incumbent will assist a current University of Georgia PhD student and full‑time technician with avian field research at the Augusta Regional Airport, with occasional travel to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Responsibilities include capture, trapping, handling, and GPS unit attachment for various raptor, vulture, and wading bird species, as well as point‑count surveys on airport property.
Routine maintenance of research equipment and other research‑related tasks are also expected. The position lasts approximately 8 months.
- Trapping and telemetry attachment on avian species (70% of time)
- Assistance with point‑count surveys (20% of time)
- Routine trap maintenance (5% of time)
- Data entry
- Avian mist‑netting, trapping, and banding experience highly desirable.
- Great organization and communication skills.
- Uphold ethical standards of data collection.
- Identification of southeastern bird species.
- Assists with field research on avian flight behavior at southeastern airports.
- Careful and accurate data collection/entry/management; detail oriented.
- Provides assistance with capture, trapping, and processing of avian species.
- Supports graduate student and advisor on research involving animal‑aircraft collisions.
Lift at least 50 pounds and work outdoors 8 hours a day.
