Position Summary

This position provides nursing care to patients in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital. Licensed Veterinary Technicians fulfill a broad range of duties including vital sign monitoring, specimen collection, laboratory testing, radiology, catheterization, medication administration, anesthesia induction, surgical assistance, resuscitation, wound care, and patient record keeping. The role also involves supervising Veterinary Assistants and training students in technical procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Patient care management and treatments including collection of blood, urine (expression, cystocentesis, catheterization) and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples (skin scraping, impressions).
  • Perform routine laboratory test procedures and maintain laboratory records.
  • Operate radiology equipment and perform intravenous and arterial catheterization.
  • Administer drugs, fluids, and immunological agents via oral, parenteral, and injectable routes.
  • Induce and maintain anesthesia and place intra-nasal or intra-gastric tubes.
  • Assist with minor and major surgical procedures and supervise veterinary medical students and surgical technicians in aseptic techniques.
  • Assist clinicians with patient management, emergencies, and emergency patient admission workflows.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment needed for hospital operation.
  • Communicate patient status to clinicians and maintain accurate medical records.
  • Train students in technical procedures and work within various technical areas of the hospital.
  • Oversee patient management by Veterinary Assistants.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and valid state licensure.
  • Experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician in a large animal medical hospital/practice.
  • Proficient in handling large animals and prioritizing patient care duties.
  • Knowledge of commonly used medications and appropriate routes of administration/doses.
  • Ability to perform and instruct on physical exams, IV catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, IM/SQ/PO medication administration, IV fluid set‑up and rate calculation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with diverse personalities.
  • Fast‑paced work capability with strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes for application in a clinical setting.
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently on hard floor surfaces.
  • Work with small delicate equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
  • Work for long periods with arms extended.
  • Deal with stressful situations and maintain manual dexterity.
  • Wear protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
  • Operate in an environment with high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids, and open wound management.
