This is a senior lab animal care position in an AAALAC accredited animal research facility at the University of Georgia campus. Incumbent will perform all aspects of animal care and husbandry in ABSL‑1 and ABSL‑2 environments utilizing multiple species of animals including, but not limited to, USDA covered species. This position will report to the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor in the incumbent’s assigned facility.
The role includes daily care and husbandry of animals: feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules and procedures. The incumbent monitors animals daily for overall health status, performs sanitation duties, prophylactic treatments, and other technical procedures as directed. The position also operates autoclaves, pressure washers, auto water systems, biological safety cabinets and IVC HEPA racks;
maintains essential records such as animal room logs, census activity sheets, cage card inventory and AUP transfers in ANOPs; assists with receiving, health assessment, handling and identification of animals; performs minor preventive maintenance and integrated pest management (IPM) tasks; aids in quality assurance and standard operating procedures development; participates in staff meetings, continuing education and training; transports equipment, supplies and animals;
and assists other staff and research personnel. The incumbent helps oversee four animal facilities and acts as a liaison between facility users and supervisor. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Ability to perform animal husbandry duties in an ABSL‑1 & ABSL‑2 research environments utilizing common laboratory animal species.
- Knowledge of the Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Attention to detail and good communication and keen observational skills.
- Ability to promote and foster teamwork to meet program and research objectives.
- Participation in UGA’s Occupational Health & Safety program, which may include vaccinations, spirometry and respirator fit testing.
