Salary: $16.78 per hour, plus 24/7 unit and shift differential
The primary purpose and function of the Vet Assistant in the Large Animal hospital is to support Registered Veterinary Technicians, veterinarians, residents, and interns in ensuring quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, and educating clients. Responsibilities include large animal care via feed, water, walk, transport, restrain, groom; stocking supplies; maintaining clinical records; and ensuring facility cleanliness. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Minimum QualificationsRequires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications- Proven experience within a large animal veterinary care clinic
- Exceptional communication skills
- Experience providing a high level of customer service to patient owners, veterinarians, and stakeholders
- Provide intermediate animal care: walk, water, feed, transport, restrain, groom.
- Administer medication, monitor vital signs, collect samples of bodily fluids (blood or urine).
- Maintain clinical records via written charting and input of charges into Vet View software.
- Assist with all aspects of patient treatment and care; maintain knowledge of medical condition, treatment, prognosis, plan.
- Inform attending clinician of any changes in patient condition promptly.
- Use downtime to assist other units with patient care.
- Stock supplies of cleaning products and patient‑care equipment.
- Ensure facility cleanliness using mop, broom, and chemical cleaning supplies.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Sit, stoop, bend intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate equipment or large heavy objects.
- Wear protective gear: mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
- Work for long periods with arms extended.
- Work in an environment with high animal sounds, bodily fluids requiring disposal, and open wound management.
