The primary purpose of the Field Services/Theriogenology Veterinary Assistant is to assist the theriogenology and Field Services department with daily in‑house and on‑site appointments, maintain and stock the necessary equipment to conduct the theriogenology service, and assist with maintaining records and charges for the theriogenology and field service department as appropriate. Handling/restraint of large animals (primarily horses/cows, but may include sheep, pigs, goats, and camelids).
The assistant is needed to safely handle all temperaments of horses. This includes handling for lameness exams (jogging/lunging), procedures, standing surgeries, radiology/bone scan, neuro exams and stallion collection.
Other duties include assisting LVTs/Clinicians/Students/Client Support Coordinator in any capacity as needed for patient care, general housekeeping/stocking/stall maintenance, animal/sample transport, anesthetic induction/recovery, and utilization of Vet View/Cubex (the hospital’s medical records software and medication dispensing).
Responsibilities- Manage the theriogenology production process: check liquid nitrogen tank frequently and reorder when necessary; check semen storage tank biweekly; maintain semen inventory list; keep track of semen shippers; maintain minimum of 5 Equine Express and 5 Canine Express Disposable shippers; properly fill, use, and clean artificial vagina; use breeding phantom; keep collection supplies stocked; ship semen; assist in freezing semen and handling frozen samples;
set up transportation for tease mares; communicate professionally with owners; prepare patient and set up supplies for procedures across species; keep track of mare book; set up and use ultrasound; use cattle chute; maintain bull breeding soundness exam supplies. - Handling/restraint of large animals: safe restraint of horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, camelids for exams, procedures, and transport.
- Administer medication, monitor vital signs, take bodily fluid samples (blood or urine).
- Establish effective working relationships with senior veterinary staff and assist with animal care.
- Inform attending clinician of any changes in the patient’s condition.
- Drive UGA owned vehicles to and from field appointments.
- Stock supplies of cleaning products and patient care equipment.
- Maintain dystocia supplies in stock for emergency use on vehicles and in‑house.
- Ensure facility cleanliness with mop, broom, and chemical cleaning supplies to sanitize cages and floors.
- Enter lab work, charges, outside lab submissions, and patient records into Vet View or other systems.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Sit, stoop, and bend intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to work with small, delicate equipment or large heavy objects.
- Wear protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.).
- Work for long periods with arms extended.
- Work in an environment with high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids, and open wounds.
- Drive as needed to perform job tasks.
