Position SummaryThis position involves the care and husbandry of laboratory animals across multiple species to support research endeavors. Duties include providing feed and water, daily animal care, sanitation of cages and animal rooms, monitoring animal health and environmental conditions, maintaining logs and records, and operating equipment such as cage washers and pressure washers. Safety procedures are followed with appropriate personal protective equipment.
The incumbent works a rotating schedule that may include weekends and holidays.
- Performs daily animal care and husbandry duties: feeding, watering, handling, transport, health checks, cage changing, enrichment, and environmental monitoring. (60%)
- Cleans and sanitizes animal rooms, ancillary areas, primary enclosures, and caging equipment. Operates, prepares, and transports equipment. Maintains organized work areas and supply inventories. Conducts minor preventative maintenance and IPM duties. (25%)
- Maintains essential records and logs; performs animal treatments and other technical procedures as required. Participates in training classes, occupational health & safety programs, and staff meetings. Provides assistance to facility users and departmental staff. (15%)
Minimum Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience caring for rodents and small animals.
• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and researchers.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Excellent observation skills.
- Complete prescribed training and instruction in standard operating procedures for routine husbandry and sanitation tasks.
- Comfortable handling and caring for a variety of small animal species.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong observational skills to detect signs of sickness, behavior changes, and environmental conditions.
Sustained periods of physical activity including standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work may be conducted under demanding conditions (high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta, noise). Exposure to biohazards and physical risks possible. Personal protective equipment (clothing, safety glasses, face shields, steel‑toed boots, respirators, gloves, etc.) is required. Routine restraint, handling, and treatment of multiple animal species and equipment transportation may be involved.
Security& Background
Eligibility to work with the university requires a background investigation including a criminal background check and verification of credentials and employment history.
