Responsibilities overview

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine offers an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care approved residency (3 years) and fellowship (2 years) program in large animal emergency and critical care. This is an intermediate position designed for applicants who have completed specialty training (DVM, internship, and residency) and are pursuing faculty appointments or equivalent roles.

Position summary

The program trains in large animal emergency and critical care with a caseload comprising ~85% equine and additional cases in small ruminants, new world camelids, and cattle. The incumbent will be mentored by emergency and critical care clinicians and surgery/internal medicine teams. Completion of the program provides credentialing requirements to pursue board certification in large animal emergency and critical care upon successful completion.

skills, abilities and competencies
  • Valid veterinary license to practice in Georgia or eligibility to obtain and maintain one.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Effective communication with referring veterinarians, house officers, and veterinary students.
  • Residency track: DVM or equivalent; 4 years post-DVM clinical experience including completion of equine or large animal surgery, with preference for teaching experience.
  • Fellowship track: DVM or equivalent; 4 years post-DVM clinical experience including completion of equine or large animal surgery, board-eligible or board-certified by ACVS-LA; preference for teaching experience.
  • Preference for experience in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students.
  • Motivation to contribute to a busy large animal teaching hospital service.
