Overview
Sheriff Sergeant:
Two positions available, one in the Inmate Needs Unit and one as the Assistant Watch Jail Commander.
Reports to: Lieutenant
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Classification: Personnel System - Requires successful completion of a 12 month probationary period.
Pay Grade: Public Safety Step Plan (SO3)
Safety Sensitive: Yes;
Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
The purpose of this job is to provide exemplary leadership associated with and assisting in directing the overall operation of the Sheriff’s Department at the unit, field, or jail level. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the Lieutenant and/or Captain in the daily operation of leading and coordinating assigned personnel in the respective assigned area of responsibility as well as the enforcement of laws/ordinances;
building trust and confidence internally with all personnel; building trust and confidence within the community; planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, and reporting; teaching, evaluating, and ensuring the implementation and utilization of contemporary standards; continuous initiation to improve systems, processes, equipment, and technology; responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, extraditing and transporting inmates, picking up arrestees, assisting and supervising deputies and court security staff, reviewing and approving reports, assisting in investigations, supervising inmate activities, booking prisoners, training and evaluating employees, testifying in court, developing and implementing policies and procedures manual.
The Sheriff Sergeant assigned to the Inmate Needs Unit will be charged with the responsibility for maintaining custody, achieving productivity, care, control and maintenance of equipment, and the safety of both inmates, staff, and the general public.
Job-Related RequirementsWork Schedule:
- Sheriff Sergeant / Inmate Needs Unit: 8 AM–5 PM Monday–Friday, occasional after-hours, overtime may be required from time to time, may be required to work holidays.
- Sheriff Sergeant (Assistant Watch Commander/Jail):
Twelve (12) hour shift from 7:45–7:45. Will be assigned permanently to days or nights. Weekends and holidays are included and overtime is required from time to time. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Emergency Position: This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions.
Minimum qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent with four (4) years of POST-certified law enforcement or corrections experience. Must possess and maintain current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act. Must possess a valid driver's license. Associate’s degree or higher preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.
Other duties include, but are not limited to, supervising staff, reviewing reports, court security, inmate transport, training, policy development, and coordination of inmate classifications and discipline as described in the responsibilities list.
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the county and the operations and functions of the Sheriff’s Office. Knowledge of law enforcement/investigative and administrative techniques and corrections processes, civil and criminal code practices, jail and field policies, courtroom procedures, record keeping, extradition procedures, and related policies. Proficiency with GCIC/NCIC/JALAN computer systems. First aid and CPR knowledge.
