Position: Academic Advisor I

Position Summary

This Academic Advisor I position within UGA's College of Engineering is an entry‑level advising position supporting incoming and current Engineering undergraduate students in their academic pursuits. The role effectively facilitates one‑on‑one advising sessions, understands requirements, policies, procedures, and the use of student‑facing technologies (Degree Works, SAGE, Athena, etc.). It provides general support related to student decision‑making, exploration, and development, makes basic referrals, and maintains accurate records.

The Advisor reports to the Director of Advising and manages a caseload of approximately 275-305 advisees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students with curriculum planning and registration each semester; maintain student records/files.
  • Effectively facilitate one‑on‑one advising sessions.
  • Provide guidance to students on progress toward graduation.
  • Understand requirements, policies, procedures, and use of student‑facing technologies (Degree Works, SAGE, Athena, etc.).
  • Provide general support related to student decision‑making, exploration, and development.
  • Consider students’ degree progress, interests, and abilities in future planning.
  • Use feedback and assess student needs to enhance advising practice.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and clarity in communications.
  • Make use of provided advising‑related information, reports, and data to enhance advising practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of university and degree requirements, as well as unit‑specific policies and procedures.
  • Use Degree Works with orientation students to document degree selection, course registration, and college resources.
  • Provide information about co‑curricular opportunities (Co‑op, Internships, Study Abroad, Graduate Studies, faculty‑led research, etc.) and special services as per students’ specific needs.
  • Serve as a point‑of‑contact for degree support and enhancement activities that extend or augment the educational opportunities associated with engineering undergraduate degree programs.
Campus Participation
  • Engage effectively with members of the College of Engineering.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development seminars, yearly UGA advising workshops, and other student support related meetings; serve on various campus committees; complete the Academic Advising Certificate Program.
  • Represent the College of Engineering at on‑campus recruitment events and related meetings.
Communication
  • Make basic referrals based on individual students’ situations, needs, and interests.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant resources across campus and related referral processes.
Administration
  • Perform administrative activities, such as answering student and staff emails, scheduling meetings and networking opportunities, and working on projects to benefit the advising office.
  • Maintain accurate records.
Other Duties
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Sage, Degree Works, Athena, and other UGA advising software preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledgeable about or eager to learn university and college degree requirements.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Familiar with or eager to learn the university’s electronic student systems and databases.
  • Effective oral and written communicator to students, staff, faculty, peers, and leadership.
  • Will establish and maintain effective working relationships for the betterment of student success, team success, and continuous professional learning.
Physical Demands
  • General office duties.
  • Sitting at a computer for long periods of time.
