This advanced position within the Grounds Heavy Equipment division is responsible for supporting a wide range of construction and maintenance operations. The incumbent assists concrete masons with forming and placement of concrete, serves as a spotter during excavations, and performs back filling and grading for curb, sidewalk, storm sewer installations, and utility repairs. The employee operates a dump truck and demonstrates moderate proficiency in the operation of heavy equipment, including skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, and breakers, for hauling operations and trade‑related tasks.
Candidates who do not currently possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required to complete an in‑house Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) program and obtain a CDL Learner’s Permit within six months of hire; operation will be limited to equipment not requiring a Class B CDL during this period. Additional responsibilities include proficiency in traffic control, support across projects, and weather‑related duties such as snow and ice removal and clearing downed trees.
- 60% Operates skid steer, backhoe, excavator, dozer, dump truck, and other equipment in support of civil construction projects (utility installation, grading, drainage, hauling, paving, sidewalks, construction, etc.).
- 10% Excavates and installs utility piping and assists with utility repairs.
- 10% Establishes elevations and sets base for new pavement construction.
- 10% Assists in asphalt placement as well as the forming and placement of concrete.
- 10% Sets up and performs traffic control: placement and maintenance of barricades, cones, and temporary signage.
- Knowledge of construction practices/techniques, including concrete forming/placement, grading, and job site safety.
- Ability to perform manual labor as needed in support of construction activities.
- Ability to operate heavy construction equipment, including skid steers, backhoes, excavators, dozers, dump trucks, and other equipment used in civil construction projects.
High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred QualificationsClass B CDL and 2 years in the construction field.
Physical Demands- Lift up to 75 lbs throughout an 8‑hour workday.
- Stand/walk for long periods, stoop, bend, work from a standard and extended ladder, and work with hands above head.
- Perform duties under adverse weather and/or climate conditions (rain, heat, cold).
- Drive as needed to perform job duties.
