DutiesThe Pacific West Region is recruiting for temporary seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of the initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. The duty station for this role is Lewis and Clark National NHP:
Astoria, OR.
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds.
- Perform minor plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in‑kind fittings and fixtures.
- Perform minor carpentry repairs of limited difficulty to buildings and quarters; construct, install, repair, and replace such items as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim, and cabinets.
- Perform routine maintenance at different sites and visitor facilities, including cleaning restrooms and making minor repairs as needed.
- Receive, unload, and process incoming shipments according to established procedures, and report discrepancies and damage to others responsible.
- May perform other duties such as painting equipment, masonry work, roofing, welding, or assisting higher‑grade workers with maintenance of utility systems in the facility.
- Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites.
Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms where surfaces to be coated or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
Working ConditionsWork is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Work may occur in inclement weather and/or wearing protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
RequirementsConditions of employment:
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet the Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectees will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
- May be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; background on driver’s license and driving record will be required.
- Must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
- May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or 16 years old and meet educational or vocational training requirements, or be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work only during school vacation periods or part‑time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
- Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid; relocation expenses are the employee’s responsibility.
