Overview

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager or a Medical Technologist, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of laboratory tests in accordance with hospital policies and procedures; provides for operation, care, and maintenance of scientific equipment; collects specimens from patients ranging in age from neonate to geriatric, and is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of such duties and procedures.
Responsibilities- Perform a variety of laboratory tests in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Operate, care for, and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Collect specimens from patients across age groups (neonates to geriatric) and ensure accuracy and timeliness of duties.
- Address questions from clients and providers under the supervision of the Medical Technologist.
- Knowledge of / Skill / Ability to maintain full confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Strong written, oral, and organizational skills; attention to detail.
- Experience with blood collection technique on all age groups.
- Ability to perform high complexity testing and understand pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing variables; identify problems that may affect test performance.
- Computer skills, excellent customer service, and ability to liaise between clients and providers.
- Knowledge in laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity; ability to multitask under stressful situations.
- MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
- BLS certification required through American Heart Association.
- Must provide a copy of High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Associate’s Degree in appropriate field.
- No previous experience is required in addition to clinical training; however at least 1 year of experience is desired.
- Must provide copy of High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Standing and/or walking about most of the shift; lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, etc. light weight (under 50 lbs) equipment, materials and supplies for less than half the shift; may occasionally work in a strained or difficult position. There is some exposure to hazards that might cause relatively serious injury or illness if proper safety precautions are not taken in dealing with patient specimens, acids, and diseased tissue.
