Oversees operations and maintenance of the Maroon Bells Recreation area and facilities to ensure a safe, high-quality public experience. Supervises seasonal staff, prioritizes and coordinates work activities, and upholds County stewardship standards.
Please note that this position is a term-limited position and is scheduled to end December 31, 2026. This position is eligible for benefits.
- Monitors trail and facility conditions and supports development and execution of seasonal maintenance plans.
- Responsible for supervision, scheduling and assigning work for seasonal staff; participates in daily work functions to maintain trails, native areas, infrastructure, and amenities.
- Ensures adequate staffing; tracks labor needs and recommends staffing adjustments to management.
- Assists with development and maintenance of policies and procedures specific to area of responsibility; participates in hiring, onboarding, training, coaching and performance management for seasonal staff.
- Communicates operational needs, successes and challenges to improve service levels and efficiencies.
- Provides visitor information, education and assistance; may serve as a first responder and provide assistance with medical situations as needed.
- Responsible for the start-up and shutdown of off-grid solar and water systems.
- Builds and maintains partnerships supporting the management of the Maroon Bells including contractors and US Forest Service staff.
- Oversees reservations for campgrounds, amphitheater, and East Maroon Portal via online reservation system. Understands and enforces the Maroon Bells‑Snowmass Wilderness overnight permit system.
- Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work‑related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
- 3+ years experience serving in a supervisory role in a land management, recreation, or facilities management related field.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification required within three months of start date;
Wilderness First Responder or equivalent preferred. - Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google products.
- Basic trade skills including carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, operation of small power tools, gas powered landscaping tools, and small equipment operation.
- Trail building/maintenance best practices.
- Communicating clearly and concisely and relaying details accurately.
- Principles and practices of public administration.
- Customer service techniques.

- Cash handling procedures.
- Delegating and communicating directions clearly.
- Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.

- Work is performed in the field and in a standard office environment. Field work includes exposure to inclement weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, machinery, and chemicals.
- Frequently lifts up to 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 feet; occasionally lifts up to 30 lbs. from floor to knuckle; frequently lifts up to 20 lbs. from shoulder to overhead; occasionally pushes and pulls items weighing up to 100 lbs.; occasionally performs bi-lateral lift of 30 lbs. and carries up to 50 ft.; frequently lifts up to 35 lbs.

- Occasionally climbs ladder; must be able to stand and balance on ladder.
- Regularly walks over uneven terrain and up to 5-10 miles per day.
