Costume Shop Supervisor (Summer Seasonal)

Theatre Aspen, the award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Colorado mountains, is accepting applications for a Costume Shop Supervisor to join our summer staff. Situated in one the most unique destinations in the world, Theatre Aspen is the region’s most celebrated theatrical institution and has been a fixture of the community for over forty years, attracting a long litany of renowned performers.

Along with the Wardrobe Supervisor, the Costume Shop Supervisor is responsible for the timely planning and accurate realization of the costumes for the summer season. An ideal candidate is energetic, hands‑on and motivated to manage all costuming needs.

Responsibilities
  • Working closely with the Wardrobe Supervisor, the Costume Shop Supervisor oversees the completion of constructed, pulled or rented costumes for the stage and helps supervise the costume staff.
  • Attends all production meetings, designer runs, tech rehearsals, openings and performances as needed.
  • Oversees shop supplies, especially stock fabrics, notions and materials.
  • Oversees all aspects of the Costume department budget in conjunction with the Production Manager.
  • Manages shop equipment, including repairs, maintenance, and replacements.
  • Working closely with Designers, supervises the timely inclusion of fabrics + show specific materials into costume production.
  • Works in coordination with the Wardrobe Supervisor on the transfer of Costumes and accessories to and from the shop, Tent Site, or storage facility. This includes assisting the designer with the maintenance of a piece list.
  • Supervises the timely completion of costume notes for each running production from fittings through closing night.
  • Organizes, maintains and supervises Costume Stock, restock of the inventory; and the acquisition and return of rented pieces or wigs.
  • Demonstrates leadership in shop safety and shop spaces being left clean and in orderly condition.
  • In collaboration with the Wardrobe Supervisor, advise and supervise two or three wardrobe/costumes/wigs apprentices.
  • Serve as a substitute wardrobe member if a member of the wardrobe team has to call out for a performance.
  • Serve as a site supervisor on a rotating schedule with other department heads.
Qualifications
  • Three years of demonstrated experience in management with a team oriented and collaborative attitude, and sensitivity to the artistic process. Experience in a professional costume shop is preferred, but career individuals with a graduate degree or equivalent work experience will be considered.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Skilled at creative problem solving and troubleshooting. A sense of humor is essential.
  • Thorough understanding of the costume design and construction processes and all the related aspects of the overall theatre production process. Knowledge of and general experience with theatrical design, draping, cutting, stitching and crafts.
  • Solid working knowledge of costume materials including, but not limited to: fabrics, notions, crafts supplies and costume/fashion history.
  • Working knowledge of machinery and equipment used in the costume industry.
  • Valid Driver’s License and comfortable driving a cargo van or box truck as needed.
  • Positive, professional demeanor, and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and grow skills along with career.
  • Full‑time availability for a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to work in a physically demanding role that requires lifting to 50 lbs. as well as frequent climbing, squatting, and standing for long durations of time.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions in a physically active environment.
  • Knowledge of theatrical terminology and interpreting documentation.

This position supervises Theatre Aspen Apprentices, mentoring and training emerging talent within the field. The willingness to collaborate, instruct and provide guidance is an essential requirement.

Dates:
May 25, 2026 – September 2, 2026

Pay: $850‑$1000 per week, plus housing. Travel provided.
