* General Responsibilities:
Responsible for providing direct instruction to students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Responsible for assisting with and implementing special education instructional programs, and following state and federal policies regarding special education procedures.
Essential Duties

- Plans daily instructional activities for all students to enable students to achieve IEP goals and progress in general curriculum;
- Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs;
- Develops summative tests of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement;
- Maintains order within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management;
- Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
- Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts;
- Maintains a favorable psychological environment for learning;
- Participates in district level professional development programs;
- Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the home and the school;
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence;
- Respects the home responsibility of parents for their children;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
- Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities;
- Assists in screening, evaluating and recommending placements of students for the division's special education programs;
- Drafts and facilitates the development of IEP's for assigned students following district, state and federal requirements;
- Assists in developing short- and long-range goals for the student's individualized education program (IEP);
- Works cooperatively with classroom teachers who have LD/ED students in regular classes by interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students and assists students with regular class assignments;
- Maintains ongoing records of student performance in order to evaluate progress;
- Conducts an annual review and updates short-term objectives;
- Holds periodic parent conferences and/or home visits;
- Keeps abreast of recent developments in education for special education students and shows evidence of continuing professional growth;
- Satisfactorily completes all paperwork related to special education procedures;
- Perform related work as required.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
:
Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence based teaching practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work. Experience working in an educational setting with students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
Specific knowledge of functional and adapted academic instruction, assistive technology, interventions to support communication and social skills development. Familiarity with the Virginia Aligned Standards of Learning, or comparable modified curricula and instruction on Activities of Daily Living. Able to provide instruction to students with extensive support needs in a collaborative setting, promoting inclusive practices. Knowledge of special education laws, policies and practices.
Education and Experience:
Required:
Bachelors Degree in appropriate related field. Must have a record of successful full-time teaching experience or have demonstrated a successful student teaching placement/internship.
Preferred:
Masters Degree. Experience working in a classroom setting with students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Experienced in moderating IEP meetings.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Terms of Employment
Work Schedule: 10M - 217 Days - 7.25 Hrs.
Salary Scale: Teacher
Speical Requirements: Must hold or be eligible for Va. Teacher License w/endorsement in Special Education Adapted Curriculum K-12
FLSA Status: Exempt
