JOB SUMMARYAssists special education teaching staff in a self-contained setting by performing instructional tasks in small groups and one-on-one settings; performs record keeping, supervision and interventions for special-education students with moderate or profound disabilities. Performs duties with moderate supervision. May include providing specialized instructional support to a caseload under the direction and supervision of a related service provider or other education specialists.
May include training in and performance of invasive medical procedures as designated by individual student health plan which may include but are not limited to: catheterization, ileostomy or colostomy bag care, oral suctioning, gastric/feeding utilization and care, and rectal diastat administration.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of applicable District policies and procedures.
- Works directly with students with a variety of special needs, including profound disabilities and health protocols.
- Under the direction of a medical provider (e.g. school nurse), receives training in and performs invasive, medically necessary health procedures in accordance with an individualized health plan in the education setting. Invasive procedures may include but are not limited to catheterization, ileostomy or colostomy bag care, oral suctioning, gastric/feeding utilization and care, and rectal diastat administration.
- Under the direction of a related service provider (e.g. augmentative communications specialist, physical or occupational therapist or other specialist), receives significant training in specialty area; provides instructional support and data tracking for the specialist's caseload or facilitates individual student access using specialized adaptive technology on a full time basis (e.g. text to speech, eye gaze technology, live captioning).
- Provides a variety of instructional activities including but not limited to transition programs, adaptive physical activity, life-skills practice and remedial work as designed by teacher for special needs students.
- Assists students with tracking assignments and managing behaviors.
- Assists in providing for the communication needs, nutritional needs, physical needs and administering of student health plans as directed by licensed staff and/or building administration.
- Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, and feeding under direction of teacher.
- Performs physical intervention, prompts, restraints or seclusions of an intense and regular nature in accordance with District policy and applicable statutes in the classroom.
- Maintains current certification in crisis intervention procedures.
- Assists special needs students with bodily functions (e.g. toileting, diapering, and hygiene) or non-invasive or invasive medically necessary school-based health protocols, per health plan. Invasive medically necessary health protocols may include: catheter, feeding tube, gastric bag, etc.)
- Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, recess, vocational activities, library, etc.).
- Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data as directed by teacher.
- Models appropriate behavior in various social settings; assists students with vocational skills.
- Confers with teaching staff on progress of students.
- Tests and evaluates students' abilities and progress as directed by teacher.
- Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance.
- Implements daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of and planned by the licensed staff member.
- Assist with IEP meeting preparation as needed.
- Monitors and assists students as needed.
- Assists with loading and unloading students from buses and accessing and exiting from specialized equipment (e.g. harnesses, standers, walkers, wheelchairs).
- Assists the teacher in the developing educational/vocational materials and assignments (copying, typing, laminating, etc.).
