Overview

Temporary Highway Technician 1 - Winter Seasonal  Ashland, Crawford, Erie, Huron, Lorain, Medina, Richland, Wayne Counties

Responsibilities
  • Operates basic equipment and performs general highway maintenance duties, varying by season, including constructing, improving, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning highways and rights-of-way; drainage work; excavating and grading ditches; digging channels and cleaning waterways; cutting brush and vegetation; applying chemicals to vegetation; patches and seals berms and pavement; mixing mortar and concrete; shoveling backfill; installing and repairing catch basins and stream channels;

    completing other drainage work; mowing; loading and transporting materials; and other related maintenance tasks; operates basic equipment to haul trash. May be required to work second or third shift.
  • Performs snow and ice control and related maintenance duties using snow plows with spreaders, brine dispensing equipment, and dump trucks with attachments; maintains, repairs and installs traffic signs and pavement markings on inter-state, federal, and state highways and roadways; repairs, replaces or straightens signs and route markers; installs and repairs guardrails as needed.
  • Performs emergency response and cleanup and traffic control, including flagging traffic through work zones or around accidents; sets lane closures; places high water signs; erects barricades; receives on-the-job and formal training in various construction inspection activities (maintenance-related inspection items).
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment including sharpening, sanding, painting, refueling, lubricating, tire checks, bulb replacement, washing and cleaning trucks and equipment to prevent rust; changes tailgates and snowplow blades; conducts pre-trip inspections of equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous labor and administrative tasks; operates two-way radio/base station; coordinates with crews for emergencies; answers public inquiries; assists stranded motorists; maintains daily records and logs (fuel sheets, material check sheets); moves equipment and loads/unloads materials; stocks inventory in warehouse.
  • Formal education in arithmetic including addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, and fractions; ability to read, write and speak English; 3 months of training or 3 months of experience in operation of basic equipment.
  • Note:

    Applicant must have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License without air brake restriction at the appropriate level to operate motorized equipment as described in the position description; or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment.
Qualifications
  • Formal arithmetic education (addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, fractions) and ability to read, write, and speak English; 3 months of training or 3 months of experience operating basic equipment.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License without air brake restriction at the appropriate level to operate motorized equipment; or equivalent minimum class qualifications for employment.
