Position: Transportation Civil Engineer / Transportation Engineer 1 PN 20051900 & PN20051930

Overview

Transportation Engineer 1 (TE1) is the first step in ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering (TCE) Program – a 12‑month, hands‑on training plan that rotates new civil engineering graduates through the department’s three core disciplines:
Planning & Design, Construction, and Highway Maintenance. Each TE1 receives a thorough introduction to these disciplines, works side‑by‑side with professional ODOT engineers, and gains the experience needed to advance within the agency’s engineering career series.

Responsibilities
  • Receive a comprehensive introduction to the core civil engineering disciplines.
  • Work alongside ODOT professional engineers in Planning & Design, Construction, and Highway Maintenance.
  • Engage in hands‑on transportation training, including traffic modeling, environmental mitigation, and construction planning.
  • Participate in field reviews, project record maintenance, and materials testing assignments.
  • Collaborate with project management staff to develop detailed construction plans and coordinate construction plans with external stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Accepted for the Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by the Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and to follow engineering standards and policies.
  • Basic proficiency with CAD software, Open Roads Designer (ORD), Project Wise, and other ODOT engineering tools.

Compensation

Hourly rate $30.55–$44.74, full‑time schedule 07:00 AM–03:30 PM with potential hour variations.
