JOB SUMMARY
The Enterostomal Therapy nurse provides a comprehensive ostomy, skin, and wound care program for inpatients ET nurses act as a consultant to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and reassess the care of patients with abdominal stomas, acute/chronic wounds, and incontinence. The ET nurse provides services to patients ranging from adult through the geriatric developmental life span.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Effectively assess and reassess patients based on criteria that are age- and culturally appropriate for the patient; assess/reassess patient needs using objective and subjective assessment of the physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and environmental needs of the patient.
- Identify appropriate patient needs and nursing diagnoses from the collected assessment data and plan care appropriately; formulate and document a plan of care based on assessment and in collaboration with the patient, family, and/or significant other, as well as appropriate members of the multidisciplinary patient care team.
- Update and document the plan of care daily and as indicated based on ongoing assessment; administer medication correctly/safely utilizing the five rights, two patient identifiers, and double checks of high-risk medications per policy.
- Perform nursing procedures, interventions, and actions safely according to hospital policy/procedures; consistently and thoroughly complete documentation on correct forms per medical center/unit policies.
- Coordinate and provide discharge planning and patient and family education throughout hospitalization; provide care that is age appropriate and culturally sensitive; evaluate the appropriateness of individual patient’s response to nursing care and modify the plan as evidenced by chart documentation.
- Recognize change in patient’s physical and mental status and inform physician and/or other health-care professionals as evidenced by chart documentation.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives by evaluating outcomes of patient care and participating in data collection.
- Graduate of a school of nursing and maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or other NLC state with multistate privileges.
- Achieve and maintain current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification.
- Constantly work near moving mechanical parts
- Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
- Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
- Frequently required to walk and move about
- Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
- Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
- Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds
- Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds
- Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
- Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs
