Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Project Engineer to support growing demand within our Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team on the Laleham 132kV Substation Extension project. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering a complex infrastructure project within a live HV environment
, contributing to the long‑term expansion and resilience of the electricity network.
You will support the delivery of the full Laleham 132kV Substation Extension
, including:
- Integration of new HV bays
- Upgrades to LVAC systems
- Supporting long‑term substation expansion works
Working closely with the Project Manager / Project Director and wider project team
, you will have accountability for successful project delivery across all stages of the project lifecycle.
- End to end M&E delivery: from detailed planning and temporary works on, pre‑commissioning/commissioning, and clean handover.
- Turn design intent into a buildable, safe, right first‑time plan; you’ll run task briefs, permits and ITPs, and keep quality tight with progressive assurance.
- Orchestrate interfaces with others across mechanical, electrical, P&C, civils and HV specialists; derisk energisation windows and coordinate OEMs and subcontractors.
- Drive the short interval schedule (lookaheads, constraints removal) and keep cost, change and risks visible and controlled.
- Champion Zero Harm and CDM; lead with clear RAMS, permits, isolations, and a “stop, think, act” mindset.
- Bring people with you: brief clearly, listen actively, and keep stakeholders (client and delivery partners) fully aligned.
- Lead and attend project reviews / project meetings.
- Have an awareness of the Digital Briefcase.
- Maintain accurate project records (progress, daily diaries etc.).
- Prepare both internal/external reports and liaise with stakeholders.
- Help ensure reports provide relevant information to enable informed, cost‑effective decisions in line with overall strategy.
- Help ensure scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinated working.
- Specify, understand, develop and implement technical information and drawings into delivery.
- Understand and specify plant and equipment requirements.
- Proven M&E delivery in substations, industrial or heavy infrastructure, comfortable with method statements, permits, ITPs, TQs, change, and site leadership.
- Confident interpreting drawings/specs and translating them into safe, sequenced work.
- Strong planner/communicator who keeps lookaheads realistic, removes blockers, and holds a calm line under time pressure.
- HNC/HND/Degree in Mechanical or Electrical (or equivalent). SMSTS/SSSTS, CSCS/ECS desirable;
National Grid/substation experience a plus.
- An organised, innovative and creative Project Engineer with knowledge and experience of working on Projects who is proficient commercial/project management communications.
- Experience in implementing safe systems of work.
- Experience in managing risks and change processes through solutions‑based approach to problem solving.
- Good interpersonal skills that enable working relationships to be developed at all levels across the business and be able to negotiate and influence.
- Discuss ideas and plans competently and with confidence.
- Communicate new concepts and ideas to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Awareness and promotion of the benefits of diversity and inclusion.
- Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed.
- Proactively develop others around you including junior members of the team.
- Identify and drive personal development.
- Proficient on O365.
- Holds or working towards a formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience.
- Holds or desire to work towards either the APM PFQ/PMQ.
- Holds CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent.
