Job Overview
The North Carolina Arboretum invites passionate individuals to serve as Discovery Camp Assistants, leading children through nature‑based education in summer Discovery Camps.
Responsibilities- Assist with daily outdoor‑focused programming for campers grades Pre K‑8th.
- Help lead or assist outdoor activities, including interpretive nature hikes, macroinvertebrate investigations, overnight camping, team‑building games, arts and crafts, and Geocaching.
- Prepare and maintain environmental education materials.
- Participate with work teams on various subject areas.
- Assist with Eco Lab class operations and other related tasks as required.
- Youth leadership experience and strong customer service skills.
- Experience working with children in outdoor settings (preferred).
- Ability to work unsupervised, flexible in a changing environment.
- Applicants must be 18 or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent; one year of college or comparable experience preferred.
- Background on teaching/education, childhood development, outdoor/environmental education, biology, ecology, or related fields highly valued.
Pay will be $18.00 per hour. Hours: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Physical RequirementsWork requires long hours leading programs outdoors in various weather conditions, often carrying a pack of equipment.
