The primary purpose of the position is to function as an Applied Climatologist producing specially tailored climate analyses and products supporting worldwide DoD Command and Control activities.

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is recruiting for Full‑time Meteorologist to work with the 14th Weather Squadron (14 WS) at Shaw AFB, located at Asheville, NC.

Duties
  • Provides extensive climatological expertise to complete assigned projects through professional knowledge and skills in meteorology, climatology, hydrology, and geography.
  • Applies professional knowledge of weather, climate, and hydrological data and models to create seasonal to sub‑seasonal support products.
  • Exercises professional project management skills and periodically serves as team leader.
Key Requirements
  • Continued education in the form of attendance to assigned training seminars, classes, computer‑based training courses, working groups, and computer‑working groups is expected.
  • Employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret Security Clearance.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36‑507. Duties are essential to wartime/contingency operations. Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling the position during an emergency are not available.
  • Master’s Degree and python programming highly desired.
  • Employees may be required to work overtime.
  • Professional knowledge of climatology and meteorology is required. Ability to convert acquired data and knowledge into products that are easy to understand and clearly convey the desired concepts and outcomes. Knowledge of related fields to include physical geography, oceanography, hydrology, geology, statistics, computer programming, and other geophysical and mathematical disciplines is highly desired.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with interested parties (regardless of their background in this field) all pertinent information concerning applicable techniques, methods, and principles. Ability to analyze what a customer asks for and create a detailed support plan that ensures the customer gets a product that best suits their needs. Also, the ability to quickly assimilate and evaluate available information to expeditiously provide solutions to customers’ meteorological, climatological, and hydrological needs.
  • Ability to use scientific and technical libraries to obtain reference materials that are pertinent to customer support tasks.
  • Ability to adjust work operations and program objectives to meet changing program requirements within available resources with minimum sacrifice of quality and quantity of work, and the ability to create work plans (for multiple concurrent projects) that ensures tasks are documented and prioritized according to organizational guidelines and resources are expended in a highly efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and groups among a diverse group of people of various technical backgrounds carrying out large projects effectively and in a timely manner to include skill in managing several projects simultaneously, and the ability to establish and maintain good relationships with individuals and groups within the office as well as outside the immediate work unit.
  • Knowledge of allied computer disciplines such as software development techniques, configuration management, python programming, and web services is highly desired.
