Position SummarySkill Set is an evolving community-based outreach and skills building program at STEAM Studio, UNC Asheville's 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art making space. The program is designed to create access to the tool and material literacy that is foundational to maker-based STEAM education. From computer aided drafting to power tools and CNC machining students learn design, development, iteration, engineering, craft, and the science behind it all.
Skill Set's mission is to eliminate barriers to STEAM education. The employee in this role should be able to create inclusive and accessible programming for students and staff.
Position Summary
The Skill Set Instructor is a part time, 11-month position that will support programming including classes for youth through K-12 after school, workshops and outreach events, and summer camp programs both onsite at STEAM Studio and at offsite locations. This role may periodically support workshops for adults.
The employee in this position may have lead teaching or co-teaching responsibilities as well as substitute teaching responsibilities in after school and summer camp contexts. The position includes occasional weekend hours. A valid driver's license and comfort driving a cargo van is required.

Minimum Education /Experience/
Skills:
Position requires bachelor's degree in art, engineering, education or related field plus relevant professional training and experience in hands-on designing or making. and/or Previous experience working in both K-12 and/or higher education with STEAM focus. Valid drivers license and comfort with driving a cargo van. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. A background check is required for this position
Preferred Education/Experience/
Skills:
- Post-baccalaureate credentials (e.g., Master's degree or higher), in art, engineering, education or related field.
- Experience with (or strong desire to learn) teaching students of all ages how to use tools safely
- Experience with (or strong desire to learn) woodshop and metal shop tools and equipment
- Experience with (or strong desire to learn) 3D modeling and Computer Aided Drafting
- Experience with (or strong desire to learn) electronics and programming microcontrollers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly self-motivated
- Strong problem solving skills
- Ability to create and maintain inclusive and accessible spaces
Part time, averaging 20 hours/week with the possibility of full-time during summer programming.
