Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina, UNC Asheville is a public liberal arts campus in the University of North Carolina system. The dean will lead the newly organized College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, inspiring a new vision, advancing a future‑facing curriculum, and providing transformative leadership in the face of changing circumstances. The role involves

  • Strategic visioning and planning in alignment with Academic Affairs and the university’s strategic priorities (Technology Integrated Curriculum, Career and Leadership Development, Future‑Facing Academic Programs, Student Success and Experience).
  • Optimizing work processes, fostering robust business practices, and ensuring fiscal stewardship of departmental budgets, trust fund allocation, and endowed professorships.
  • Ensuring accountability through program reviews, enrollment, retention targets, and resource allocation to departments.
  • Driving innovation and relevance by fostering a culture of risk‑taking and piloting new initiatives.
  • Qualifications

    • Minimum Education/Experience/Skills – PhD or terminal degree from an accredited institution; associate professor tenure or higher; 5‑7 years of higher‑education experience with prior leadership or supervisory roles. 12‑month appointment, no teaching/research expectations.
    • Preferred Education/Experience/Skills – At least three years of higher‑education administrative experience; preference for tenure in a discipline of the college.

    • Knowledge of accreditation, SACSCOC, and UNC System policies.
    • Highest standards of integrity, ethics, and transparency.

    Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead strategic planning initiatives to create, communicate, and drive a new and united vision for the college, focusing on enrollment growth, retention, and student success.
  • Establish robust business practices, enforce course enrollment policies, and develop initiatives to increase summer teaching and enrollment.
  • Oversee program reviews, enrollment and retention targets, and allocate resources based on performance.
  • Promote innovation and relevance through calculated risk‑taking and pilot initiatives.
