Position: Temporary Position - Outreach & Tutoring Coordinator

Summary: To provide, coordinate, and support pre-professional opportunities for UNC Asheville University students to work as trained tutors focused on student success with Asheville City Schools’ AVID program and elective classes at three schools. The Coordinator manages UNC Asheville’s AVID responsibilities under the MOU with ACS, primarily by hiring and managing UNC Asheville student tutors, tracking engagement and outcomes, and delivering an end-of-year impact report.
The role also supports ACS AVID activities at UNC Asheville, coordinating day-of schedule and logistics for events such as campus field trips and the Summer Bridge program. The Coordinator collaborates across internal and external boundaries and champions UNC Asheville’s commitment to community engagement and career-readiness.
Key duties include: co-coordinating tutor training, conducting observations, providing coaching, managing program budgets (including AVID Summer Bridge), organizing campus visits for AVID students, participating in AVID site teams and university committees, and ensuring tutoring and assessment practices meet high standards of educational effectiveness and fairness.
Supervisory ResponsibilityThe Coordinator recruits, co-trains (with ACS personnel), schedules, observes, coaches, supervises, and evaluates approximately 20–30 UNC Asheville student tutors each semester and manages 2 Tutor Leaders. Tutor Leaders are UNC Asheville students who work as peer leaders on-site at AVID sites. Each semester, the Coordinator completes midterm and final evaluations for each tutor and Tutor Leader and monitors the tutoring budget.
CollaborationThe role requires extensive collaboration with Asheville City Schools, Education Department faculty, public school teachers and administrators, and families to ensure high-quality academic support.
QualificationsRequired: Bachelor’s degree; experience in education or a related nonprofit context; knowledge of current education policies; familiarity with AVID or similar college-readiness initiatives; strong communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively in university and school environments.
Preferred: NC Teaching license and K-12 classroom experience; ability to manage and administer all aspects of Education Department tutoring programs; experience with training and assessment; experience managing budgets and supervising paid staff/students; understanding of UNC Asheville’s Liberal Arts and Sciences-based Teacher Licensure program; experience working with diverse school populations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understanding of current education policies and initiatives; program administration and implementation experience; experience with relationships between college students and public school students; experience working with diverse and multicultural students and families; training and experience in AVID or similar initiatives; strong written and verbal communication; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canvas or equivalent; ability to plan and monitor expenditures to meet objectives;
ability to prepare budget documents and reports; problem-solving to address student concerns.
Temporary position with anticipated 6-month assignment (January – June 2026). Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work during special events may be needed. Travel to participating Asheville City Schools is required.
