Job Overview

Under general supervision of the Supervisor, this position requires proof of a completed Driver's Education Training Program, which consists of EDU 114 and EDU 214, or a valid Virginia teaching certificate with a Driver Education endorsement. The endorsed Behind the Wheel (BTW) instructor executes the teaching objectives for learning safe driving skills as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The purpose of BTW instruction is to provide students the opportunity to gain the skills and experience needed to pass the road skills evaluation to be a licensed driver and to build students' capacity for lifelong, conscientious, and safe driving habits. This position requires applicants to be detail-oriented, analytical observers with excellent communication and leadership skills. Complete adherence to Virginia laws, codes and guidance is of the utmost importance when training students to be responsible citizens as operators of a motor vehicle and roadway users.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Maintain an accurate record of student progress within BTW instruction.
  • Schedule students' BTW training with each high school point of contact, family and student via communication before the BTW sessions as well as during the required 14 BTW sessions (7 observing sessions and 7 driving sessions per in-car student).
  • Submit required payroll and driving records, daily logs, road skills evaluation and special notes of interest to the LCPS central office.
  • Develop lesson plans for and provide instruction in the areas of safe operation of a motor vehicle. Lesson plans should provide ample opportunity for defensive and anticipatory driving as students progress to more complex driving environments.
  • Evaluate and communicate feedback to students and their families in an ongoing manner relating to students' BTW progress.
  • Complete and issue a copy of the Temporary Driver's License (TDL-180) to the parents of students who have successfully completed the BTW program, the school the student attends and the DMV.
  • Educate families/guardians about their rights and responsibilities as they pertain to the students' freedoms as a new driver.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development relating to BTW instruction.
  • Model safe, appropriate passenger behavior as the instructor in the vehicle. Refrain from the use of cell phones or other devices, provide minimal distraction to the observing student and driver, and provide assistance/intervention to the driver when necessary.
