Position: Teacher Assistant, Special Education (Blind/Vision Impaired)
Job Overview

The Teaching Assistant of the Blind/Visually Impaired ("VI TA") provides assistance to students who are blind or visually impaired under the direction of a licensed Teacher of the Blind/Visually Impaired. The Office of Special Education is committed to providing students with disabilities opportunities along a continuum of services that offer access to and participation in the activities of the school and community environments as appropriate to the age and educational needs of the student.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
  • Produces instructional materials in alternative formats (e.g., enlarged print and/or Braille, recorded texts, e-books, tactile maps and graphics, etc.) for use by students who are blind/visually impaired at the same time as their peers
  • Creates and adapt digital documents following digital accessibility standards
  • Works with students who are blind/visually Impaired to ensure full access and participation in classroom instruction and activities
  • Ensures students are safe in the event of a school emergency, school drills, and locating bus at the end of the school day
  • Explains/reiterates/reinforces instructions/directions, explains words and concepts, and ensures student understanding
  • Assists students with meeting goals and objectives in accordance with their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and records data regarding student performance and behavior
  • Fosters independence of students who are blind/visually impaired
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, teachers, and administrators
  • Participates in ongoing training in highly specialized strategies for adapting instructional materials in accessible formats
  • Maintains inventories of Braille materials and other tactile materials
Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Experience

Experience as a teacher aide or experience working with children

Licenses and Certifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage a schedule and work effectively with teachers, administrators, and students
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated effective computer/technology skills
  • Ability (or ability to learn how) to produce instructional materials in alternative formats (e.g., enlarged print and/or Braille, recorded texts, e-books, tactile maps and graphics, etc.)
  • Ability (or ability to learn how) to create and adapt digital documents following digital accessibility standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge, abilities, and/or skills to effectively manage the needs of children: knowledge and/or experience in meeting the needs of students of disabilities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time.

Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Scale B/Universal - Non-exempt Level 4
