Position Purpose

The Recreation Generalist plays a key role in supporting the Aquatics Division of the Apex Park and Recreation District, with primary responsibilities at the Arvada Aquatics Center (AAC). This position works closely with the management team to ensure smooth operations, exceptional customer service, and safe aquatic programs for all participants and guests. The Generalist is the point of contact during commissioned events at the facility.

The Generalist is the onsite supervisor during contracted events and works in the absence of Aquatics management. They assist with the supervision of part‑time staff, including Senior Guards, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, and Coaches. Responsibilities include supporting daily facility operations, monitoring mechanical and maintenance needs, and upholding safety standards. Additionally, the Generalist collaborates with management on hiring, training, scheduling, program planning, and evaluation to maintain high‑quality aquatic offerings.

Beyond the AAC, this role contributes to the oversight of aquatic programs across the District’s facilities, including three year‑round indoor pools and three outdoor pools during the summer season (May–August). The Recreation Generalist ensures that all programs meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Acts as the supervisor on duty when management is not on site.
  • Point of contact during contracted events and rentals at the Arvada Aquatics Center.
  • Must troubleshoot equipment issues and rectify them promptly.
  • Supervises lifeguards, coaches, and recreational swim team members as required.
  • Conducts set‑up and tear‑down for events as needed.
  • Performs routine maintenance on competitive equipment and collaborates with management on replacement schedules.
  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervising of part‑time staff.
  • Coordinates part‑time work schedules and ensures guests receive the highest level of safety and service.
  • Develops day‑to‑day operational procedures and follows them.
  • Responds to staff and public inquiries courteously and resolves conflicts efficiently.
  • Ensures safety of staff and guests by maintaining the appropriate number of guards on duty.
  • Recognizes emergency and dangerous situations quickly and calmly, performing lifesaving techniques as necessary.
  • Checks and maintains proper chemical readings, records, and chemical levels, adjusting as required; informs Manager or Aquatics Engineer of any faults or irregularities.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
  • Supports the Aquatics management team with staff and facility scheduling as needed.
  • Attends Aquatic Management meetings and other District meetings as required, including possible assignments unrelated to Aquatics.
  • Displays excellent customer service, provides leadership for the Aquatics Division, resolves concerns, problems, conflicts, and supports aquatics and facility staff with emergencies.
  • Submits maintenance work orders as necessary.
  • Checks rescue equipment, inventory, first‑aid supplies, logs, etc., and replaces any missing or low‑stocked items; orders supplies as needed.
  • Completes paperwork, including opening/closing checklists, end‑of‑shift cash reports, incident/accident forms, rescue records, health and safety forms, and Workers’ Compensation paperwork.
  • Assists supervisors with assigned projects as needed and follows a flexible schedule as required by supervisor.
Supervisory Duties
  • Acts as supervisor on duty during events at the Arvada Aquatics Center in the absence of management.
  • Assists with the supervision of part‑time aquatics staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of competitive swimming and diving equipment, including timing systems, pool configuration set‑up and tear‑down, and maintenance of such equipment.
  • Working knowledge in various aspects of aquatics including programming, supervision, standard aquatic equipment, current swimming techniques, competitive swimming and diving, and lifeguarding.
  • Knowledge of computers and technology pertaining to competitive equipment.
