Job DescriptionThe PLM Analyst (Polarizing Light Microscope) prepares and analyzes environmental samples according to scientific methodology and company quality assurance programs and SOPs. Sample analyses include asbestos (PLM/TEM), mold, bacteria, VOCs, allergens, Legionella, radon, lead, silica, and more. The analyst validates and reviews data for accuracy, uploads laboratory data into the LIMS, and ultimately generates required reports to clients. Sample workloads are scheduled according to due dates and hold times.
Analysts receive training in current methodologies and equipment use.
- Log in, prepare, and analyze environmental samples for asbestos.
- Accurately enter and report sample descriptions and analytical data using LIMS.
- Perform independent QC analysis on other analysts’ work.
- Analyze reference materials and proficiency samples, and other quality control samples as needed.
- Maintain client service and provide technical support as needed.
- Assist the QA manager in developing, implementing, and collecting QA processes for the different analytical tests.
- Perform and complete all analytical testing QA related tasks as needed.
- Assist in pursuing, receiving, and maintaining necessary laboratory accreditations.
- Coordinate projects according to their rush status and due time for timely delivery.
- Assist co-workers on analytical questions as necessary.
- Follow company policies and procedures and ensure coworkers do the same.
- Manage and dispose of analyzed samples as needed.
- Train new asbestos or other analytical testing analysts as needed.
- Perform root cause analysis and determine and implement corrective actions for errors and issues as necessary.
- Maintain all equipment properly and coordinate services of all equipment used in the laboratory as needed.
- Communicate available capacity to Lab Manager.
- Support departments within the lab (login, asbestos, metals, pollen/spores) when appropriate and as needed.
- Perform other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Supervisor/Manager.
- Preparation/Analysis of bulk samples by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) in accordance with the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures.
- Perform all analyses and quality control measures in accordance with the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures.
- Perform equipment maintenance and calibration in accordance with the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Enter data into the LIMS as specified and report data to the client, verbally and electronically.
- Store and dispose of client samples in accordance with the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures.
- Degree in Geology or similar is preferred.
- At least 1‑3 years of laboratory experience.
- Computer and software proficiency.
- Ability to multitask.
- Ability to distinguish colors when performing analysis.
- Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.
- Professional working proficiency in English is required, including the ability to read, write, and speak in English.
This role is full‑time and the candidate must be able to work Tuesday − Saturday 1:00 pm − 9:00 pm. Training will be conducted Monday − Friday.
Compensation$20 – $27 per hour, based on experience.
