ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform building inspections to determine compliance with adopted building, zoning and other city adopted codes related to building construction; refer to approved construction plans, and confer with construction superintendents, architects, engineers and building owners.
  • Interprets, advises, and answers questions for contractors, builders and the general public regarding building permitting, adopted building, energy, electric, plumbing, and mechanical codes for both residential and commercial.
  • Communicate inspection results orally, in writing, and electronically.
  • Assess re-inspection fees, post notices of non-compliance.
  • Assist in the arrangement of inspections and inspection schedules in Cloudpermit or over the phone.
  • Stay up to date on and maintain knowledge of existing, revised, and new state and local codes and ordinances and professional developments within the field.
  • Maintain building inspection records utilizing the City of Fruita building software Cloudpermit.
  • May perform Building Division related CORA requests.
  • May create building related reporting including monthly and annual reports.
  • Communicate with contractors and the public; read and interpret building construction plans and building construction codes and ordinances in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Perform plan reviews for residential and commercial projects when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Building Inspector I – High school diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the building trades or construction field which has provided familiarity with a variety of trade skills. Basic knowledge of all areas of building construction methods, materials, practices, tools, and equipment. Some experience as an inspector in regulatory capacity is desirable. Will be required to obtain IRC within 1 year, and IBC certification within 2 years of employment.

Will be required to obtain ICC Residential or Commercial Plumbing Inspector Certificate within 1 year. Completion of college coursework in Building Technology, Construction Management, Architecture, or Engineering from an accredited college, university, or technical school will be recognized.

Building Inspector II – Same as Building Inspector I and the following: A minimum of three (3) years of construction related job experience as an inspector, contractor, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent, foreman in charge of construction. A minimum of one (1) year of inspection experience is required to qualify for Building Inspector II. Possession of current IRC and IBC certifications.

Obtain ICC Commercial Plumbing Certificate within 1 year of employment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record
  • Inspector I must obtain IRC and Residential Plumbing certifications within one year of date of hire.
  • Inspector II must have current IRC and IBC certifications and obtain Commercial Plumbing within 1 year.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the citizens, contractors and be skilled at conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, internet, office management and recording keeping skills required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills which include the ability to interact with all levels of personnel in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide quality customer service; willingness to actively look for ways to help the community.
  • Ability to read, understand, convey and enforce applicable codes and ordinances using tact and impartiality.
  • Ability to detect hazards or violations and recommend corrective measures in a firm and readily understandable manner.
