Position Summary

The Construction Trades Teacher provides classroom and hands-on instruction in construction trades aligned with industry standards and the curriculum framework of the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The instructor prepares students for entry-level employment, apprenticeships, and postsecondary training in the construction industry through instruction in carpentry, construction safety, blueprint reading, building materials, and proper use of construction tools and equipment.

Construction trades education will also provide comprehensive training in building, maintaining, and repairing structures, encompassing hands-on skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry. The program integrates industry-recognized credentials and career readiness skills while maintaining a safe shop and laboratory environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide classroom and laboratory instruction in construction trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, framing, construction math, blueprint reading, building materials, and tool safety.

* Implement curriculum aligned with industry standards established by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

* Prepare students to earn NCCER industry-recognized credentials.

* Demonstrate safe operation and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment.

* Teach and enforce industry safety standards including OSHA-based safety practices.

* Supervise students in shop environments and ensure adherence to all safety procedures and district policies.

* Assess student performance through project-based learning, demonstrations, written assessments, and industry certification preparation.

* Maintain NCCER program documentation including training records, credential tracking, and curriculum compliance if the program is an NCCER Accredited Training Program (ATP).

* Maintain construction shop facilities, equipment, and inventory of tools and materials.

* Coordinate hands-on student projects that reinforce construction skills and teamwork.

* Promote career awareness and connections to local construction employers, apprenticeships, and workforce opportunities.

* Maintain accurate student records and grades according to district policy.

* Participate in professional development and maintain industry knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.

* Possession of or eligibility for a Vocational-Technical Education teaching license issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department.

* Documented work experience in construction trades (carpentry, construction technology, building trades, or related field).

* Ability to obtain and maintain required teaching licensure within state timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

* NCCER Instructor Certification or ability to obtain certification.

* OSHA safety certification (OSHA-10 or OSHA-30).

* Experience with NCCER curriculum delivery or industry training programs.

* Experience supervising construction projects or job sites.

* Previous teaching, training, or youth mentorship experience.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the following with or without reasonable accommodation:

* Stand and walk for extended periods during instruction and lab supervision.

* Lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

* Bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, and climb ladders when demonstrating construction techniques.

* Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.

* Maintain manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for demonstrations.

* Work in a shop environment with noise, dust, and varying temperatures.

* Visually monitor students and equipment to ensure safety.
