Overview
To organize and supervise landscape services, repair and reconstruction work in a variety of park, tree, landscape and irrigation maintenance areas; and performs a variety of complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Supervision Received and ExercisedUnder the direction of the Public Works Director and/or Public Works Manager. Exercised direct supervision over professional and maintenance staff.
ResponsibilitiesEssential and other important responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Knowledge of:
- Principles and methods involved in modern parks and grounds maintenance; horticulture applicable to landscape maintenance and development and weed abatement practices.
- Methods, materials and techniques used in the construction of public works projects.
- Comprehension of grading procedures as they relate to landscape design practices.
- Types and levels of maintenance and repair activities generally performed in field maintenance programs.
- Elements of construction technology as they relate to assigned construction maintenance and repair activities.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.
- Safe work practices, traffic control, confined space entry.
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance of parkland, traffic landscape areas such as medians, parkways and gateways, and recreation areas, including one (1) year of supervisory or lead responsibility.
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in personnel supervision, construction maintenance and inspection and/or a closely related field. An Associate’s Degree may substitute for up to one (2) two years of the experience requirement.
Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, e.g. a high school diploma or a GED. Bilingual (particularly Spanish language) communication skills are also preferred.
Licenses/Certifications: Possession of, and continuously throughout employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a (Pesticide) Qualified Application Certificate. The following licenses/certifications are desirable:
Landscape Irrigation Auditor Certificate, N.R.P.A. Playground Inspector Certificate, I.S.A. Arborist license.
