Job Description

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

Plumber I: High School graduation (or GED), including or supplemented by courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of training equivalent to an apprenticeship in the trade and some responsible work in the plumbing and pipe fitting trades at the trainee or helper level. Plumber II: High School graduation (or GED), including or supplemented by courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of training equivalent to an apprenticeship in the trade and considerable progressively more responsible work in the plumbing and pipe fitting trades, some of which shall have been at the level of Plumber I.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION- both levels: Possession of an appropriate, valid vehicle operator's license; in particular, of the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Level II- Journey worker plumber license.

NOTE:

All APS employees authorized to drive APS vehicles are subject to either the Omnibus Transportation Act drug or alcohol testing procedures (if required to possess a CDL) or the Arlington Public Schools Alcohol and Drug testing procedures (if CDL is not required).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Plumber I- Good knowledge of procedures, practices, tools, and safety precautions of the trade, and ability to use a broad range of plumbing, pipe fitting, water, sewage and heating construction and repair measuring, power and hand tools and equipment. Good knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with plumbing, heating, sewage, and drainage systems maintenance and construction activities, and ability to respond appropriately in hazardous situations.

Good knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations applicable to the plumbing trade. Plumber II- Thorough knowledge of procedures, practices, tools, and safety precautions of the trade, and ability to use a broad range of plumbing, pipe fitting, water, sewage and heating construction and repair measuring, power and hand tools and equipment.

Through knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with plumbing, heating, sewage, and drainage systems maintenance and construction activities, and ability to respond appropriately in hazardous situations. Thorough knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations applicable to the plumbing trade. Ability to lead, train, instruct trainees, level I plumbers in performing assigned tasks. Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, schematics, and manufacturers manuals.

Ability to plan and layout work projects, and to estimate time and materials needed.

Both Levels- Ability to operate a variety of vans and trucks. Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, prints, schematics, etc. Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and costs, etc., and ability to maintain records.

Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships. Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials pertinent to the trade.

Confers with Supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and advise or consult on individual/crew assignments, work-orders, equipment to be used, and materials to be obtained or purchased;
May be authorized to order or purchase materials;
Studies building plans and work instructions to determine tools, equipment and materials needed, and to ensure holes cut will not affect structural integrity;
Confers with building administrator and/or Supervisor to determine whether part or all building must be closed down during work;
Measures and cuts holes in floors and walls to fit pipes, using hand, power, and measuring tools;
Cuts and threads metal, plastic or ceramic pipes, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and threading machines; bends pipes to required angle using pipe bending machine and/or hand tools;
Assembles and installs, interior and exterior (below-ground) pipes, pipe fittings and valves, caulks pipes, and tests for leakages. May dig trenches to remove, repair, or replace pipes;
Repairs and or replaces plumbing and heating fixtures such as faucets, sinks, commodes, water heaters, and kitchen fixtures such as sinks, and dishwashers;
Replaces cooling and dual temperature pumps; repairs and replaces fan coils, radiators and hot water heaters); repairs swimming pool and irrigation piping systems; installs, tests and repairs cross-connection and back-flow control devices;
Clears clogged drains or commodes using hand and power tools and chemicals;
Conducts preventative maintenance inspections and repairs of all assigned systems;
Loads and unloads supplies and equipment into a county automotive vehicle, drives to and from work sites;
