The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Nature and History Camp is seeking temporary Summer Camp Naturalist Aides to plan and lead a variety of nature experiences for campers ages 6-10 or 11-14. Daily camp activities mainly take place outside and include animal meet and greets, games, crafts, storytelling and physical activities like hiking, fishing, etc. This program operates outdoors for the full duration of the camp day (except during extreme weather conditions).
ResponsibilitiesStaff must commit to working from June 22 - August 7 (core camp dates). Additional weeks from August 14 – August 25 may also be available. Training will begin in mid to late May through June, which includes online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. Several positions are available, and hours vary.
Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, and reliable transportation, including the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.
QualificationsMinimums:
- High school/GED; plus
- Some paid or volunteer experience in interpretation, communications, or education.
Substitution: Successful completion of additional college coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Licenses/Certifications: First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates in one or more of the following:
- Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps;
- Working with animals;
- Working outdoors performing hiking, scouting, fishing, or other outdoor skills;
- Demonstrated interests in nature and history; and
- Experience/willingness to work with individuals with disabilities.
Special Requirements
If selected, all summer staff may be required to:
- Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older)
- Provide references, which will be requested at time of interview.
- Attend all required trainings, wear a uniform, and have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
- Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for the Camp Director or other designated positions.
- Possess a driver license and successfully complete a driving license record check (for applicants 18 years and older).
- Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
Additional Information
Interviews will be conducted on a continuous basis. Interested applicants should apply as soon as possible. Written notifications will be sent to applicants who applied but were not hired once all positions are filled. Generally, these notifications are sent in mid-July.
