Chief Development Officer

Location: Arlington, VA
Office Situation: Hybrid – in office 3 days a week
Why This Opportunity Stands Out- This is a rare opportunity for a hands‑on fundraising leader to step into a high‑visibility executive role with national impact. You’ll join a financially strong, mission‑driven nonprofit at a pivotal moment, preparing to launch its first comprehensive, multi‑year fundraising campaign and expand its philanthropic reach.
- Direct, executive‑level partnership with a seasoned and decisive CEO
- Real ownership – the ability to personally drive major and principal gifts and shape long‑term fundraising strategy
- Opportunity to architect and lead a multi‑year fundraising expansion, not inherit one
- Small, capable team where leadership and execution truly matter
- Hybrid work schedule that balances focus, collaboration, and flexibility
- Outstanding benefits, including a pension (rare in today’s market)
- Deeply meaningful, mission‑driven work supporting individuals and families nationwide
- Lead and execute a multi‑year fundraising growth strategy
- Launch and lead a comprehensive, multi‑year or capital campaign
- Personally cultivate, solicit, and close major and principal gifts (six‑ and seven‑figure level)
- Partner closely with the CEO and Board on fundraising strategy and donor engagement
- Expand donor pipelines through major gifts, corporate partnerships, foundations, and planned giving
- Lead, mentor, and hold accountable a high‑performing development team
- Represent the organization externally with donors, partners, and stakeholders
- Travel nationally (approximately 30%) for donor and leadership engagement
- 10+ years of progressive nonprofit fundraising / development leadership
- Proven, independent fundraising success – must be able to clearly articulate personal results
- Experience securing major and principal gifts
- Experience leading or serving in senior roles on multi‑million‑dollar fundraising campaigns
- Hands‑on fundraising mindset (not strategy‑only)
- Preferred (Not Required):
- Military‑affiliated or service‑related exposure (professional or personal)
- Advanced degree (MPA, nonprofit management, philanthropy, MBA)
- Fundraising certifications such as CFRE, CAP, or AFP credentials
- Experience launching new giving channels or campaigns
If you’re a proven nonprofit fundraising leader ready to take ownership of a high‑impact, national role, now is the time. Apply today or reach out directly for a confidential conversation.
