Registered Nurse - Medical/Stroke
Purpose & Scope:
The registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of their assigned patients across all levels. The RN supervises assigned personnel and must be knowledgeable about department and hospital policies and procedures related to nursing care. The role requires interpretive, interactive, consultative, management, and supervisory skills. Effective communication in written, auditory, and visual forms is essential, with primary emphasis on spoken communication.
Skills in writing, telephone communication, and manual dexterity are also necessary.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
Experience:
Minimum of one year of nursing/patient care experience in an acute care setting is required.
Certification/Licensure:
Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions or hold a Compact State Licensure in Nursing.
Current BLS certification is required.
Registered nurses on designated units must maintain specific certifications. New nurses or graduates have up to one year to complete these specialty requirements:
- ACLS: ED, ICU, CVICU/CVSD, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiopulmonary Rehab, Bronch Suite, Interventional Radiology, Radiology Safety Nurses, 6A, 6B, 7A, 8B, Labor and Delivery, Hemodialysis, Respiratory Therapy, Telemetry Nurses, GI Unit, PACU
- PALS:
Pediatric Nurses, NICU, Mother Baby, Labor and Delivery - De-escalation training: BHU, ED
Note:
ACLS or PALS cards demonstrate competence in BLS skills per American Heart Association Guidelines. If an employee holds current ACLS or PALS certification, this satisfies the BLS requirement, and a separate BLS certification is not necessary.
