The Pathology Assistant supports the Anatomic Pathology laboratory by performing gross examinations of surgical specimens, grossing and cutting frozen sections, accessioning cases when needed, and assisting with overall workflow to ensure timely, accurate diagnostic services. This role works closely with pathologists, histotechnologists, lab assistants, and clinical teams while maintaining compliance with CAP/CLIA standards and institutional policies. The laboratory processes a large daily workload that includes biopsies, complex surgical resections, and frozen sections from multiple hospital service areas.
The Pathology Assistant plays a critical role in maintaining productivity and turnaround time goals while upholding specimen integrity and patient safety.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field with completion of 2 years Pathologists’ Assistant training program or equivalent training experience.
Experience- Previous experience in a hospital-based, high-volume anatomic pathology laboratory preferred.
- Experience performing gross examinations, frozen section preparation, and accessioning strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in histology or related clinical laboratory operations highly desirable.
ASCP certification (PA-ASCP) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Strong knowledge of anatomy and surgical specimen handling.
- Proficiency with cryostat microtomy and frozen section workflow.
- Ability to accession accurately and troubleshoot specimen discrepancies.
- Effective communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with strict attention to detail.
