Purpose & Scope
Across all levels, the registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of their assigned patients. The RN is also responsible for supervising assigned personnel. The position requires knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to nursing care. Interpretive skills, interactive and consultative abilities, along with management and supervisory skills, are essential. The ability to present information clearly in written, auditory, or visual formats is necessary.
The primary mode of communication is spoken, supported by written, telephone, and manual skills.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
Experience
One year of nursing or patient care experience in an acute care setting is required.
Certification/Licensure
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions or holding a Compact State Licensure in Nursing is required. BLS certification is mandatory. Specific certifications must be maintained for designated units, with a one-year period for new nurses or graduates to meet specialty requirements. Certifications include ACLS, PALS, NRP, and de-escalation training, depending on the unit. Current ACLS or PALS certifications satisfy BLS requirements as per American Heart Association guidelines.
