We are seeking a sharp, motivated attorney with a passion for regulatory law to join our small but impactful trade association in the mining industry. This role supports the associations legal, regulatory, and government affairs work, with a focus on environmental compliance, occupational health and safety, and legislative advocacy. The ideal candidate is a quick learner with strong analytical skills, excellent judgment, and a collaborative spirit.

This is a unique opportunity to work closely with seasoned professionals and gain deep exposure to the intersection of law, policy, and industry. Some travel is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor, analyze, and interpret federal environmental and occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., Clean Air Act, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)).
  • Support the associations committees and serve as liaison to the Health & Safety Committee, including preparing meeting materials and tracking regulatory developments at MSHA.
  • Assist in drafting regulatory comments, position papers, and internal policy memos.
  • Participate in coalition meetings and represent the association in agency and stakeholder discussions.
  • Collaborate with the associations policy team on legislative tracking and member engagement.
  • Conduct legal research and provide guidance on compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Support member companies with regulatory inquiries and updates.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge management and institutional memory.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to at least one U.S. state bar (D.C. preferred and/or Maryland/Virginia).
  • 2-8 years of experience in environmental, administrative, or regulatory law (internships and clerkships considered).
  • Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental or occupational health and safety law.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a small team environment.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Experience with the Clean Air Act, MSHA regulations, and other environmental statutes.
  • Background in the mining industry.
  • Background in science, agriculture, or public policy.
  • Prior experience working in or with trade associations, government, or Capitol Hill.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory process and federal agencies (EPA, MSHA, etc.).
  • Committee or stakeholder engagement experience.
