Senior Energy Marshal Position Overview
The Senior Energy Marshal supports a critical infrastructure project by leading and enforcing the Hazardous Energy Control Plan (HECP) throughout the full project lifecycle. This role ensures all energy isolation activities are executed safely, consistently, and in compliance with applicable local codes and project standards.
As the subject matter expert (SME) for hazardous energy isolation, the Senior Energy Marshal collaborates closely with engineering, construction, and operations teams to mitigate risk while maintaining schedule integrity.
Key Responsibilities- Lead compliance with the Hazardous Energy Control Plan (HECP) across all project phases
- Establish acceptance criteria for HECP and verify proper implementation
- Apply local codes and standards as the foundation for hazardous energy control practices
- Develop and implement centralized Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Determine group versus individual LOTO requirements
- Initiate and manage energy isolation activities, providing continuous progress updates
- Coordinate with construction teams to minimize operational impacts during isolation activities
- Serve as the SME for hazardous energy isolation incident investigations within project scope
- Participate in High-Risk Activity (HRA) planning meetings
- Review high-risk SOWs, SOPs, and MOPs to confirm identification of all hazardous energy sources
- Verify personnel qualifications, training, and PPE compliance for all isolation tasks
- Produce monthly project reports summarizing hazardous energy isolation activities and compliance status
- Develop controls for all forms of hazardous energy, including but not limited to:
- Mechanical
- Chemical
- Thermal
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- OR equivalent professional experience
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings and system redundancies for effective LOTO design
- Strong understanding of MEPI hazardous energy control in mission-critical environments
- Master Electrician–level knowledge or equivalent experience
- Experience with commissioning or energy isolation on large-scale infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with MEP systems, electrical theory, and critical equipment such as:
- Switchgear
- UPS systems
- Generators
- Knowledge of hazardous energy identification and controls beyond electrical systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, and thermal systems
- Understanding of construction documentation and building management systems
- Strong communication and diplomacy skills to coordinate across multiple stakeholders
- 10–12+ years of technical engineering experience (project‑based or field‑based)
