Hi Moms. I need some opinions (please be nice though!) I am a certified experience High School math teacher. I have not taught in 6 years, being a SAHM that whole time. I have worked at Sylvan and also done private tutoring. I'm not licensed yet in Texas, but my license from IL (where we moved from) is still current. We just moved to TX in April and I'd like to do tutoring around here (Arlington) but I'm not sure how to publicize myself or how much to charge.
I was thinking about, $15/hour at my house or $25 at their house or a public library (the extra expense would be to pay for a babysitter). I know I can probably charge more but I don't want to milk people out of their money! Any thoughts? Thanks!
Certified High School math teacher. Licensed in Illinois; current. Not licensed in Texas yet. Have taught at Sylvan and privately. Based in Arlington, TX area.
Rates and AvailabilityProposed rates: $15/hour at my house or $25/hour at the student’s home or at a public library; note that babysitting would add to the cost. The poster believes these rates may be too low or high and asks for input. She would not charge any less than $30/hour according to another poster's view.
Advertising and Outreach- Advertising through the schools and possibly at the public library may work. Nothing is better than word of mouth, though!
- Fort Worth Child or Dallas Child magazine.
- A free newspaper distributed at dentist offices and doctors' offices (name not given).
- Check with the schools to post a flyer in the hallway or on a school bulletin board.
- Advertise at community centers, libraries, churches, Boys and Girls Clubs and various other community organizations.
- Foster Care Agencies and Foster Parent Association newsletters; you could mail flyers to the Foster Parent Association (we are members of the Tarrant County Foster Parent Association) and to various Foster Care Agencies to get the word out. Advertising might be $5 a year with us; more info can be emailed if available.
I definitely understand not wanting to 'milk' people out of money! That being said, I wouldn't charge any less than $30/hr you are a degreed, certified teacher. You have knowledge, experience, & skills that will help you help these kids. You deserve it!
