Overview
The Physician Assistant (PA) plays a vital support role in our organization. The PA provides professional patient care and assistance to the Physician/Surgeon and the clinical staff. The PA is primarily involved with direct patient care in support of the physicians of the practice, in outpatient clinics, and in hospital settings. The PA functions in multiple settings (operating room, clinic) under the supervision of the assigned physician and may perform activities involving initial evaluation and treatment of a patient’s condition, as defined by state standards and the Physician Assistant Practice Act.
Responsibilities- Hospital/Surgical Center Responsibilities (as applicable): assist the surgeon by rounding on patients in the hospital, perform hospital consults, assist with major and minor surgical procedures, prepare patients, close wounds and provide postoperative care, apply dressings and devices, perform minor procedures, manage patient traction and post-op care, coordinate patient care between office and hospital, write orders for surgical patients pre- and post-operatively, coordinate discharge instructions, and ensure operative reports are dictated within 48 hours.
Participate in on-call activities as required by center policy. - Office Responsibilities: see patients independently and with supervision; dictate clinic progress notes; order tests and develop treatment plans with physician approval; dictate H&Ps, consultations and discharge summaries; perform joint aspirations/injections; interpret x-rays; apply casts/braces; remove staples and sutures; triage physician calls; review labs and imaging; discuss new findings with physician; administer therapeutic injections and minor procedures; inform patients about pre-operative instructions and surgical processes;
manage care for established and postoperative patients; prescribe medications per physician protocols and ensure documentation in the medical record; update patient care plans and coordinate with physicians; order pre-operative tests and imaging as needed and document in the EHR; follow ICD-10 and billing guidelines; respond to patient messages per practice timing.
Under direct supervision of the sponsoring attending physician, the PA may perform the following activities:
Patient Care- Conduct initial and ongoing clinical assessment of patients.
- Obtain medical history and perform physical examinations (countersigned by sponsoring/attending physician).
- Develop treatment plans and provide basic patient care services including wound assessment, dressing changes, and suture removal.
- Perform minor procedures such as cast/splint application, fracture reduction, suturing (deep and superficial), and joint injections.
- Place traction pins, set up traction, and perform related procedures as applicable.
- Obtain preoperative history and perform physical examination.
- Act as first or second assistant in the operating room for procedures approved by the sponsoring/attending physician.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative education to patient and family.
- Write orders for treatment and diagnostic tests under the direction and co-signature of the sponsoring/attending physician.
- Write orders for controlled substances (Schedules III, IV, V) in accordance with state law.
- Dictate reports such as History and Physicals, Operative Notes, and Discharge Summaries.
- Position requires full range of motion, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds, with patient transfers up to 50 pounds.
- Normal visual and hearing abilities; ability to work under stress and irregular hours.
- Exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and other clinical conditions.
- Travel to associated hospitals and facilities as needed.
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with completed residency.
- Physician Assistant state licensure (Illinois) up to date.
- Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
- Active Certification from NCCPA.
- Active licensure as Physician’s Assistant in the State of Illinois.
