The purpose of the position is to perform biological science tasks common to natural resource management. Technician work is typically associated with and supportive of a professional field; work may involve substantial elements of the work of the professional field but requires less than full knowledge of the field involved.
Duties- GS/4: Assists higher-level specialists/technicians in conducting censuses and surveys. Following instructions and standardized procedures collects data on condition of forage, range, or streams. Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. Uses standard statistical methods and procedures in performing routine and recurring testing of the field data collected. Enters and retrieves data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or other information management systems.
- GS/5: Performs routine and recurring testing of collected samples. Records all data collected and provides preliminary assessment and classification of the information. Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data. Uses mechanical and chemical methods to control invasive plants.
- GS/6: Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problems noted. Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating. Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment and inventories equipment. Evaluates quality assurance compliance and calibrates equipment as necessary. Maintains and organizes computer databases.
- GS/7: Organizes, schedules, and executes a wide variety of established natural resource management projects. Plans field projects, independently choosing from among several possible courses of action at different stages of each project. Prepares draft project reports which include literature research, descriptions of methods, preliminary data analysis, graphs and charts, results, and recommendations for planning. Provides advice, assistance, and training to students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers.
