Where You Will Work

Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.

Description

A hands-on learning experience for individuals who have completed a classroom based mechanical/welding training program. This program includes a combination of minimal classroom courses focused on Freeport-Mc Mo Ran  policies and procedures and on-the-job training designed to develop selected candidates into highly skilled and professional trade employees. Successful candidates are responsible for hands-on learning and performing maintenance/welding/operations activities with minimal to moderate supervision, or supports journeymen in their maintenance activities.

  • Perform basic mechanical/welding maintenance activities
  • Perform safe operation of maintenance mobile equipment such as forklifts, stinger trucks and overhead and mobile cranes
  • Perform work area and equipment safety inspections
  • Attend required classroom training sessions as necessary
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
  • Completion of, or graduation from one of the following:
    • A structured mechanical/welding apprenticeship program
    • A certified mechanical/welding training institute; OR
    • Completion of a Joint Technical Education District (JTED) program
    • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety.
  • Basic mechanical/welding maintenance principles
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous maintenance/welding experience in an industrial setting
Criteria/Conditions
  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
