Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to cars, light trucks, SUVs, trailers and small equipment to ensure Gila County and its employees have safe, reliable, and properly operating vehicles and equipment. This position requires the operation of service trucks and occasionally some light and heavy duty trucks and equipment in addition to ensuring a clean and safe workplace.
SupervisoryResponsibilities
This position does not supervise other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, minor and major overhauls, vehicle and equipment performance evaluations, and comprehensive multi-point safety inspections on County vehicles and equipment, including sedans, SUVs, light-duty trucks, trailers, ATVs, small gasoline engines, small equipment, generators, pumps, law enforcement equipment, and other specialized equipment as required.
- Performs diagnostics to determine the nature of repairs required to make the vehicle/equipment safe and operable, including road tests before and after repairs.
- Maintains and repairs gasoline engines, diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, drivetrain components, tires, brakes, steering and suspension, exhaust, emissions, electrical/electronic systems, and climate control systems.
- Assists with heavy-duty vehicles/equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Uses a variety of tools and equipment, including diagnostic computers, scanners, service trucks, automotive lifts, pressure washers, cranes, welders, forklifts, and similar equipment as required.
- Documents and records repair and maintenance information on paper and electronically via fleet management software.
- Operates service trucks and towing equipment to provide field service maintenance and repairs, and emergency services for County vehicles and equipment. Services may occur after hours as part of a rotational on-call schedule.
- Designs, fabricates, modifies, repairs and paints vehicle accessories and mounts; installs equipment and modifications, emergency lighting and decaling on law enforcement and emergency vehicles.
- Maintains a clean and organized workplace and assists with vehicle fueling, field deliveries, and related tasks.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position has no responsibility over any type of budget.

Oral Communication DutiesThis position trains colleagues, communicates with customers, and staff.
Written Communication DutiesThis position creates or edits documents, internal memos, emails, and reports. This position inputs repair and maintenance records via fleet management software.
Interactions with the General PublicInteracts regularly with internal coworkers and other departmental personnel over the telephone, by email, and/or in person. Incidental contact with the public may occur as part of the work location.
Interactions Specifically with CustomersFrequently (More than 25% but less than 40% in a year).
Minimum Education RequiredHigh School Diploma or GED.
Minimum Years of Directly Related Experience RequiredTwo (2) years combined of directly related on-the-job experience in either car, truck or equipment maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Professional Credentials RequiredMust possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Basic training in gasoline engine maintenance, brakes, steering & suspension, basic electrical, climate control and gasoline engine repair required. Professional trade and/or technical certification desirable.
Knowledge RequiredRoutine maintenance; electrical/electronic systems for vehicles and other equipment; hydraulic systems; understanding of mechanical machines and tools; hazardous materials handling and disposal; automotive/equipment maintenance principles and practices; diagnostic equipment use; safety precautions; and design and fabrication techniques.
