Position Summary:
The Crew Leader I position is an opportunity to make a difference in young peoples’ lives while completing conservation projects on public and private lands. Leaders will be mentors, educators, and facilitators for young adults, working to promote the health and resiliency of our land, air, and water.
Standard schedule generally consists of Monday – Friday, 8-hour workdays, plus occasional overtime. Crew Leaders may also be required to come into the office to complete administrative duties and check-ins with program staff.
The Crew Leader I position requires patience, a consistently positive mental attitude, mentorship, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of competence in the outdoors. It also involves an administration role, where weekly paperwork is due in a timely manner to supervisors. Finally, crew leaders must exhibit the ability to effectively work on dynamic teams and those from a variety of communities.
The Hiking Club was created for kids ranging from 3rd-8th grade to have access to the outdoors to explore, create connections and memories with each other. Participants gain a deeper understanding and relationship with their ancestral lands and lifeways. Some activities include going to sacred sites and dwellings, learning dry land farming from our local farm corps program, and up to 2-hour hikes in and around Acoma Pueblo.
The Hiking Club will consist of 2 crew leads and up to 8 participants per session. Five weeks of training and preparation (including 1 week of training requiring camping), 3 two-week sessions, a week of prep in between sessions and a reporting/wrap up week.
The leaders are responsible for the safety and well-being of participants. The leaders will manage a budget for food and gear. They will be responsible for recruiting participants, creating activities and itinerary for each session. The leaders will be in constant communication with parents, staff, and local partners to ensure a smooth collaboration among the community, our program and partnerships. The leaders will identify knowledge keepers around the community to foster traditional language learning and teachings with hiking club participants.
