NOTE:
This is an at-will position and the duties described are representative of those the employee may be required to perform. Incumbents may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of sworn law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; supervise non-sworn staff in dispatch, records, and property and evidence room as assigned. Conduct personnel and equipment inspections.
- Serve as first level supervisor for an assigned shift; prepare and manage briefings; assign patrol beats. Conduct or provide for training; prepare, process and maintain a variety of written reports and personnel records.
- Train and evaluate assigned personnel; assist with training and orientation of new employees; provide training, guidance and counseling to assigned personnel; complete employee performance evaluations and reviews as required and promote career development of subordinates.
- Conduct administrative investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary.
- Respond to major crimes, accident scenes and emergencies; assume initial command; establish incident command post and implement the Incident Command System; may act as incident commander until a higher-ranking person assumes command.
- Supervise specialized teams and services including SWAT, Hostage Negotiation Team, Field Training Officers, Ranger Unit, Canine Unit, and related assignments; may supervise other specialty units.
- Participate in the enforcement of Federal, State and Tribal law and ordinances; coordinate police activities with other units in the department and/or other community departments or divisions.
- Conduct continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services; implement goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing effective services and support in assigned area of responsibility.
- Provide a full range of administrative support to management staff; conduct organizational studies, investigations, operational studies; modify programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate; prepare and present staff reports and other correspondence; interpret and ensure implementation of agency policies and procedures.
- Participate in budget development and administration for assigned operations and special details; participate in grant applications.
- Supervise and participate in the preparation of reports for various cases including those going to trial; prepare supplemental reports as required; appear in court to present evidence and testimony as required.
- Review, correct, and ensure the completeness of incident reports, required forms, summons, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates.
- When assigned as Administrative Sergeant, oversee special services, programs, projects, and units; coordinate permits, public relations functions, background investigations for new hires, and coordinate special events and off-duty employment.

Knowledge of:
- Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation. Working knowledge of modern police practices, supervisory methods, and the rules and regulations of the Gila River Indian Community and Gila River Police Department.
- General social problems and cultural diversity of citizenry.
- Working knowledge of Criminal law with reference to apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases.
- Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Tribal laws and Community ordinances.
- Methods and techniques used in providing the full range of law enforcement and crime prevention services, including investigation and identification.
- Modern methods and practices of leadership and supervision.
