Position details
The position is located in Sells, AZ.
Position SummaryUnder general supervision, provides information and instruction to individuals and families in health education and disease prevention.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assists community members and health field personnel to assess and plan for needed health related services.
- Refers patients with physical and emotional problems to other community agencies for needed assistance.
- Teaches home nursing material and instructs community members on childcare and other subjects related to individual and community welfare.
- Participates in programs to safeguard health of children, including conferences, school health programs, group instruction for parents, and immunization programs.
- Visits homes to determine patient and family needs and assists in developing a plan to meet those needs.
- Transports patients to and from hospital/clinic appointments, meetings, or consultations.
- Provides treatments to patients following physician instructions.
- Cooperates with families, community agencies, and medical personnel to arrange for convalescent and rehabilitative care of sick or injured persons.
- Applies proper medical treatment to wounds and injuries; checks and records vital signs; files; prescriptions; dispenses medication as prescribed by physician; obtains specimens for analysis.
- Instructs individuals and families in health education and disease prevention.
- Picks up and delivers medical equipment, materials, or supplies.
- Interviews patients for medical history and insurance coverage.
- Provides information on health and medical insurance coverage.
- Maintains professional knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
- Knowledge of Tohono O'odham traditions, language, history, geography, and culture.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of health related issues, medical terminology, and health and child care education.
- Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.
- Ability to operate medical equipment to include: blood pressure machine, accu-check and glucose machines, sphygmomanometer, and other related equipment.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to create and present effective speeches and presentations.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
- Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
- Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and one year work experience as a health worker, nurse aid or clinical technician.
Licenses, Certifications,Special Requirements
- Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within one year of hire.
- Must obtain certifications as a Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide or Emergency Medical Technician within one year of hire.
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
- May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
- Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
