Overview

Under general supervision, performs a variety of activities associated with booking, release, and detention of prisoners in a detention facility.

Detention Officers may be assigned to a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular rotational basis that includes working nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must possess one of the following: AZ Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA), Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), or Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA/FLETC) certification, plus experience equivalent to one year full-time detention, correctional, or closely related criminal justice work. Must possess a valid Arizona driver s license and be able to meet the Community s insurance carrier requirements (no DUI/DWI convictions within the last 3 years).

Must be able to pass an extensive background check, which includes polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and physical exam.

Responsibilities
  • Books prisoners into detention center, including photographing/fingerprinting prisoners, searching prisoners, inventorying/storing personal property, filling out required paperwork, and recording the booking process in the appropriate log books and records systems.
  • Operates/monitors video surveillance system/equipment.
  • Transfers prisoners between cells.
  • Escorts prisoners within the facility for meals and other activities.
  • Restrains combative, argumentative, and/or suicidal prisoners.
  • Determines if prisoners are ill/injured and administers/obtains appropriate medical treatment.
  • Determines release criteria for prisoners according to established policies/procedures.
  • Coordinates with Court staff when bond is posted.
  • Prepares and distributes appropriate paperwork when prisoners are released or transferred.
  • Cleans detention facility as needed.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
