ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

NEC is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of an Engineering Technician. NEC is situated within the White Mountains of Arizona. It is a place of beautiful scenery, mild climate and has a small community atmosphere where you know your neighbors. Hiking, hunting, fishing and other outdoors sports for fun and relaxation are all possible when you live in the “White Mountains”.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform all the duties necessary to prepare project layouts in the office and in the field. Prepare staking sheets, drawings, easements, cost estimates, material lists and associated documents for the installation, modification, removal or extension of NEC’s electrical distribution and sub- transmission systems.
- Coordinate work affecting new construction. This involves departments within the Cooperative and outside consumers, contractors, etc.
- Determine and design acceptable routes. Perform necessary field surveys for the actual location of new or relocated facilities, working closely with the consumers and/or their contractor through the completion of the project.
- Secure easements for private property. Prepare necessary easement documents, permits, agreements, maps and drawings for the Forest Service, BIA, BLM, state, counties, cities, and others as required.
- Provide information for the preparation and updating of system maps and records.
- Assure that work orders initiated by him/her are processed and released for construction in a timely manner.
- Maintain a current knowledge of applicable parts of the Cooperative's policies, regulations, rates, practices, and procedures and use this information as required.
- Remain current regarding technological changes in the electrical industry.
- Know and work according to NEC’s Safety Rules and Procedures.
- Patrol lines by being alert at all times to observe any unsafe or unsatisfactory condition and reporting same for action.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education
- Two-year Associates in Applied Science Degree or equivalent.
Experience
- Five years of experience in engineering, design or construction required. Preference is given to experience in electric utility line design and/or construction.
Special Skills
- A working knowledge of basic math, trigonometry, electricity, electronics, drafting and surveying.
- Have a working knowledge of RUS construction and specifications, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), the National Electric Code (NEC), and be knowledgeable of the characteristics of electrical distribution and transmission systems.
- Have demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of facility designs including, but not limited to, a comprehensive understanding of and ability to interpret civil and electrical engineering plans.
- Have demonstrated proficiency in all areas of distribution and transmission systems reinforcement work including but not limited to voltage conversions, overhead/underground conversions and relocations.
- Have demonstrated proficiency in survey procedures and survey equipment relating to electrical facilities and easements, including traverse and level surveys.
- Be able to work away from the reporting location multi-days and nights and attend seminars and special training classes as required.
- Possess the demonstrated ability to perform standard functions in Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Database programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, etc.).
- Working knowledge with GIS mapping and AutoCAD.
- Have proven work experience in multitasking and be detail oriented.
- Have the proven ability to work independently of others and maintain a high level of productivity.
- Have a willingness and ability to work with other NEC employees and departments and serve on various committees, if appointed to such.
- Be physically able to perform job functions in the office as well as in the field.
- Have good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Have or be able to obtain a valid Arizona Driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
- Be able to become a Notary Public.
4/10 schedule (Monday through Thursday).
